HDR + Nikon D80

In the past 3 months I've been messing around with my D80, 18-200VR lens and Photomatix trying to get the steps down on how to create a good HDR image. I am always finding something new and I wanted to see what others have to think about my steps. Please comment based on your own experiences on what’s worked for you.

1. Put the camera on a sturdy tripod. (If I’m ever trying to take an HDR without a tripod I make sure VR on my 18-200mm lens is turned on and that High ISO NR is off. This seems to allow you to get the full 3 fps from your camera. Also make sure you have continuous shooting on. In my experience I would say that you can handhold with VR up to around 1/5 of a second if you have steady hands. I would recommend that you use a tripod for HDR has doing it handheld is more a matter of luck.)

2. Turn VR off

3. Focus on your subject using AF

4. After focus is obtained switch your lens over to Manual Focus. This will ensure that you don’t change focus during the bracketing.

5. Use the command dial and switch your camera over to Manual

6. Either attach your wired remote control (MC-DC1) or wireless (ML-L3) remote. If you have the wired remote set it for shooting multiple frames, if you have the wireless set for the remote and timer icon. If you have neither, use the timer icon.

6. Using the scroll wheel adjust your exposure until the camera thinks it’s appropriate. +_ _ _|_ _ _ -

7. Take a test shot and look at the histogram in your LCD screen.

8. If your exposure is dark and the histogram is heavily weighted toward the left or right adjust your shutter speed accordingly.

9. Fire another test shot if desired.

10. Put your Auto Bracketing on. If you plan on taking 3 exposures I would set it between 3F 1.3 – 3F – 2.0. If you are going to take more exposures you can set it to 3F .3 – 1.0. Using your remote fire off the first three pictures.

11. Take a look at the histogram of the cumulative three pictures and see if they mostly cover the whole range. If they still tend to be weighted toward one end, I will adjust the shutter speed up or down and fire off another 3 exposures. Anytime you touch the camera be careful not to move it.

12. I typically take up to 9 exposures to make sure I have the whole range covered. This is where I wish I had the D200/D300 as it can do this automatically.

13. Once I get home I view the photos from the set and eye ball that they are aligned up properly.

14. I use Photomatix to generate an HDR and then tonemap it.
